History
African Bloodstone also known as Seftonite, is composed of the same minerals and subject to the same formation process as traditional Bloodstone Heliotrope. There are however some key differences between the two - they differ in appearance, African Bloodstone typically has more Red than Heliotrope and forms in streaks rather that spots. The majority colour is often darker, ranging from Grey to dark Grey. Also the locality, as the name suggests, it originates from Africa.
The stone is a symbol of justice. It can have a glassy to waxy luster. Legend says bloodstone was formed when drops of Christ's blood fell and stained some jasper at the foot of the cross. For this reason, it is said to have special powers. Medieval Christians used to carve scenes of the crucifixion of martyrs into bloodstone; therefore they referred to bloodstone as the martyr's stone. There is a very famous bloodstone at the Louvre museum in Paris- it is carved with the seal of the German Emperor Rudolf II.
