A large number of meteoroids enter the Earths atmosphere each day and the impact of a meteoroid leaves a crater on Earth. Material is then deposited in the surrounding areas. The common explanation for Moldavite formation was just that. The result of intense meteorite showers.

Massive showers took place between 15 and 20 million years ago and during the process, surrounding material was fused by the heat and pressure produced by impact catapulting back into the atmosphere. Friction with the atmosphere is believed to have created the unique surface to Moldavite.

The most prized specimens are the deeply grooved and clear green pieces. Moldavite is considered to be the only gem to be from space. Moldavite was found in the Bohemian sites near the Moldau River Valley, north of Prague, Czech Republic and are believed to have come from a meteorite crater in Germany.

It is believed that Moldavite was the green stone in the Holy Grail and has been treasured for thousands of years due to its powerful metaphysical energy. Moldavite was limited to only people considered royalty and nobility in the Middle Ages. The green moldavites have been and continues to be used for stones in jewellery.

Moldavite was first exhibited at the Jubilee Exhibition in Prague in 1891. It has been used as pendants for necklaces and heads of walking canes in Central Europe. Moldavite has also been made into fine works of art. This material is one of the oldest known minerals used for talismanic purposes. Two pieces of moldavite were found with the Venus of Willendorf.
